CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Anastasia "Anya"
AGE: 15
CANON: Idolm@ster: Cinderella Girls

CANON HISTORY: Wiki link!

That said, the wiki really is very bare bones.

The anime storyline follows Anya as she joins 346 Production and is part of The Cinderella Project. She's chosen to be part of the first round of revealed units, paired together with her good friend Minami Nitta to form the unit Love Laika. Love Laika enjoys success after their debut, steadily climbing to the top. Anya is content working at Minami's side as the rest of the girls in the Cinderella Project also get their debuts as the first season rolls on. The finale of the first season shows the Summer Idol Festival where unfortunately Minami falls ill from a stress-induced fever and cannot perform. Anya teams up with her fellow idol and roommate Ranko Kanzaki so that she can still perform for the festival.

When 346 Production undergoes management changes in the second season, putting The Cinderella Project in jeopardy, Anya moves with the rest of the girls to a temporary workspace and continues to work with Love Laika until Director Mishiro extends an invitation to her to start going solo. Anya is called into Director Mishiro's office, offered a chance to join Project Krone, which Director Mishiro intends to make the flagship idol project of 346 Production. Within the Project, Anya would begin work as a solo artist instead of being part of a unit. After a few days of deliberation and uncertainty, Anya talks to Minami and reveals her decision to work independently so that she can try to reach those greater heights that Minami had talked to her about before. Minami chooses to be supportive of this, encouraging Anya even as Anya said that this is the first decision that she made for herself in a long time.

Anya moves on to successfully make her solo debut, however she and Minami remain close. From there on, Anya is seen interacting with idols from The Cinderella Project and Project Krone alike.

Some background information found from the mobile game that weren't elaborated upon in the anime are that Anya was originally scouted as an idol in Hokkaido before making the decision to move to Tokyo. While she was born in Japan, she lived in Russia for the first 10 years of her life, and then moved back to Hokkaido. While working as an idol, she lives in a dormitory with other idol girls. Anya is prone to homesickness a bit more than other girls, often talking about how much she misses her family. In particular, she's very close with her parents and used to live with her grandparents in Russia as well.

She's also Russian nobility or from some sort of aristocracy but we'll probably never get information on that.

CANON PERSONALITY:

To begin, all of Anya's interactions are tempered by the fact that she struggles with a language barrier. Even though she is an idol in Japan and has lived in Japan for the last five years, she does not speak flawless and smooth Japanese. Rather, she says that even though she is fluent in both Japanese and Russian, in her head there is very little Japanese - as such when she's excited or trying to convey her real feelings, she defaults to Russian. Then realizing that the people she's speaking with do not understand her, she tempers her words back into Japanese. Even though she's very proud of her Russian heritage, she does feel some anxiety over the language barrier and worries that people will laugh at her. Many of her conversations have her apologizing for her poor Japanese at least once, as she wishes she could communicate better.

That said, it doesn't stop her from trying even once. Though she may hesitate at times or be slower to respond than others, not quite able to find the right words right away, Anya is undaunted when she wishes to help people. She steps forward and offers water bottles to tired idols, asks her partner if there's anything that she can assist with, and constantly tries to make life easier for other people. It's an inherent part of Anya's personality to be encouraging and supportive of others, watching people closely to try to determine when something is bothering them and stepping in when she can. She worries greatly over others, almost to the point of fussing, though she acknowledges it with a tilt of her head and a small apology - she really is coming from a good place.

With that in mind, Anya learns a lot from watching people. She observes others quietly when she doesn't have anything to say, watching the people that she is close to with laser-focused attention. It's to the point where she can recite small details about them, sometimes doing so to tease, but mostly just to reveal facts about them to others in order to try to promote understanding. There are plenty of moments where Anya is confused, but she doesn't like her relationships with her friends being one of them.

Still, she's also a bit of a sponge that way. In canon, she states clearly that she doesn't understand certain dialects, certain jokes (nya-jokes, specifically), or puns, and yet she recreates every single one without hesitation. There's a natural aptitude for a lot of things as she confidently recites a purple prose-style of speaking by mimicking phrases or weaving some of her own, or suddenly being really good at puns just because she assumes that's what natural. To some degree, it shows her naivete as she blindly trusts what her friends tell her, and ends up embarrassed and slightly distressed when she discovers that they might've been lying to her.

Without a doubt, Anya is a people person. Even though she's dealing with a language barrier, she treasures the people that she gets to know very much - especially those who seem to have a real interest in getting to know her. Since she's of mixed heritage in Japan, many people mistake her for a foreigner, though they do stop her on the street to praise her looks. However she laments that these people would always tell her that she's pretty, but she doesn't think that they ever wanted to be her friend, something that truly made her very sad. All Anya wants is friends. Sometimes her biracial identity causes her a bit of concern as she worries that she'll disappoint fans if she reveals that she's not the Cool Russian Beauty that everyone expects, actually being rather sweet and stumbling over her Japanese instead.

Still, she is someone who perseveres through every struggle she has. Ultimately, Anya is not used to making decisions - but she realizes how important it is for her to figure out what she wants for herself, and discovers her own ambition over the course of the anime. Deciding on wanting to take on a solo career even though she's worried about the work that she'd take on by herself, she demonstrates real ambition and lofty dreams that she wants to pursue.

Finally, Anya is a hidden menace. Don't trust Anya. She'll remember every little detail that she's observed from hanging out with you and then immediately pull out the receipts at the drop of a hat. She's the friend who will shamelessly point out every endearing habit you have to the whole world and the only time Anya ever gets worked up is when she's being supportive to the point of embarrassment, raising her voice only when she's ready to be a fierce cheerleader. And though she worries over her language tick at times, she also uses it to play with others - spinning them around in confused circles with words they don't understand and giggling to herself all the while.

Moral of the Story: Anya is well-meaning, genuine, a little self-conscious, and can't be trusted with your embarrassing childhood stories.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:
  • Performance Ability: Idol work leaves Anya fairly skilled in a number of performance aspects: singing, dancing, and public speaking to name a few. When she asks what an idol is, the job description is explained to her and she sums it up as "So they do... everything?" Which leaves Anya fairly skilled at doing everything, whether it's dancing in heels, memorizing new songs, or knowing how to make small talk for radio shows. Essentially she's very skilled as a performer and celebrity, leaving her with above average athletic ability as she's never really complained about any practices either.

  • Trilingual: Anya is prone to sprinkling phrases of Russian in her speech, a language that she is fluent in and more comfortable with. That said, she's also able to speak Japanese fairly well as she's been learning and studying it for 5 years, though she does still trip over her words sometimes. She claims that while she speaks both fluently, she has very little Japanese in her head. Other idols also ask Anya for translation for English words, which she can give definitions for fairly easily which implies she has a solid grasp of English as well even if she's not comfortable enough to converse in it and doesn't get much practice.

  • Mimicry: On a smaller scale, Anya is very good at picking up habits from other people, though she does so mostly unconsciously and in an attempt to fit in. However she's remarkably good at spitting out puns after watching someone do so for a short amount of time, as well as remembering and borrowing phrases from the even more eccentric idols. She doesn't always understand what she's doing, but she can deliver a pretty good copy of it.

  • CHARACTER: AU SECTION
    AU NAME: Anastasia "Anya" Vasilieva
AU AGE: 15 16, as of her birthday
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Instead of being a lovely silver that is apparently indicative if someone is Russian in anime, Anya's hair will be a light blonde instead.

    AU HISTORY:

Anya was born in Recollé to two loving parents, a mother of Japanese descent and a father of Russian descent. Her father was the one who named her, doted on her, and her home is still full of pictures of a strapping young man with warm eyes holding a baby in his arms - but a tragic hiking accident pulled him away from Anya and her mother. There was a time where Anya's mother's parents stayed to live with them, helping take care of the young mother and the bright-eyed baby. As a result, Anya has a close relationship with her entire family, even though her grandparents eventually found the bustling business of Recollé to be too much for them. When Anya was around the age of 10, they made the decision to move out to a neighboring city close enough for Anya and her mother to still pay nearly monthly visits.

It was when Anya lived with her grandparents that she would foster an interest in the arts. Her grandparents possessed a music box that, in particular, would remain in Anastasia's memories as she watched the ballerina spin inside and listened to the chimes play. As a child, she would mimic the ballerina and sing the song enough that her grandparents insisted that she try to pick up the arts, leading to enrolling her to become involved with choir and ballet. Motivated by her grandparents, constantly facing questions like "How are your lessons going?" and "Do we have a rising star among us?", she never quit the arts even though she didn't think she was talented enough to pursue fame even in Recollé. Rather, Anya found the arts to be fun and maintained them as a hobby and also to make her family happy, pulling from memories of when they all lived together for inspiration.

Meanwhile, Anya's mother never stopped being in love with her father. Anya's home was always decorated with charts of stars, books on astrology and astronomy alike, and her mother would weave stories about the man that she fell in love with. His pictures would never come down from their little home and Anya would puzzle over the man that she never met - but her interest in the stars would develop from her wish to become closer to him, to try to understand the sky that her father apparently loved so much. Anya's mother encourages it with nostalgic eyes, treats her daughter warmly and treasures her like she's the only gem left in her world. There's no doubting that Anya came from a very warm, loving family of what she had left.

Sometimes her grandparents on her father's side of the family tries to make contact with them from Russia. Anya remembers them well, but isn't quite able to communicate. They send postcards written in Cyrillic but with an additional English translation - Anya pouts over how she's never quite able to make sense of them.

Otherwise, Anya's childhood was uneventful. She continued her interest in the arts by practicing ballet and going to choir - though she would never once audition for a solo part. There's no doubting that she's got a natural talent for it, but she gets embarrassed when she tries to do anything on her own. This would continue as she grew older and prettier, receiving invitations to become a celebrity whether through modeling or some other avenue. Rather than accepting or being curious enough to listen to it, she would politely turn them down, insisting that someone like her isn't cut out for something fabulous like that. She's happy as she is.

As a 15 year-old student now in Recollé High, she does well in her studies. She's attentive and does well in all her classes, making friends with teachers and students and strangers alike. However there's a distinct lack of ambition that keeps her from trying to run for student council or anything like that. The closest thing she has to ambition at the moment is to look for a job so that she can help support her mother and relieve some of the burden off of her family. Yet she still manages to find the spare time to visit bars and cafes alike when she sees advertisements for live performances, constantly looking for new music to indulge in. Then there's her dabbling in the sciences, having fallen in love with the stars to the point that her only ambition and dream is that she wants to discover one of her own.

    AU PERSONALITY:

Anya is too complacent for her own good.

The primary difference that exists between her current, run of the mill school student self, and the dazzling and charming idol that lights up a stage at the drop of a hat is that Anya lacks the ambition to be an idol. Curiosity and self-interest used to drive her forward, letting her seize opportunities to reach solo opportunities so that she could become more and more successful. Now, a devoted Mommy's girl who felt as though her role was to fill the void and not leave her family behind, Anya doesn't see the merits of becoming a performer. Performing would take her away from her mother, from her grandparents, and why would she try to give up a good thing? Rather, she truly believes that if something isn't broken, why try to fix it?

If she's genuinely happy living her life as it is, why would she try to do something as superfluous as modeling or dancing? It's not something that she can imagine herself doing, no matter the encouragements from her friends or the invitations from strangers. In this life, Anya wants for nothing and hasn't found a reason to change her mind either.

In addition, there's no language barrier for her in Recollé (yet). There's nothing getting in between her and being a chattery social butterfly that is excited to talk to any stranger on the street. Coming from a warm family that invites people into their home and welcomes new connections, Anya has never bothered to be shy. Though her appearance might imply that she could come off as cold, her smile comes as easy as breathing. While she's always been encouraging and supportive, now there's no hesitation as she's able to say exactly what she means - and has never found fault in being blindly supportive to anyone she meets.

In a way, Anya has become the Ultimate Supporting Cast member. She's memorable enough to like, has a few defining traits that set her apart such as her interest in the arts, but she doesn't really care to shine. Rather, she's happy to support everyone else from the background - and all of it manages to keep her from achieving her full potential. There's innate talent for performing and entertaining, but she struggles to see herself as someone who could make a living off being famous.
